About Me

My name is Richard Paterson.

I am originally from Edinburgh in Scotland but have spent much of my adult life travelling and living abroad.

I vividly remember an experience I used to have as a child.

From one moment to the next, everything would become incredibly still. Time would stop and I would experience a feeling of enormous expansion which would grow and grow until I was indescribably huge!

Although it felt wonderful, I didn't think much of it at the time, as children don't.

As I grew and entered the world of exams, careers and relationships, the connection I felt with something far greater than myself happened less and less frequently, until it eventually faded altogether, to be replaced with feelings of restlessness and unease.

This inner restlessness and search for meaning led to many years of traveling, including long periods in India and the Far East.

I read every spiritual and self-help book I could get my hands on and began to practice meditation. Something felt 'missing' but I had no idea what it was.

Whilst visiting a famous Indian holy man, I had my first awakening experience, which opened the door to my work as a healer.

It was there also that I met international healer and clairvoyant Shoshana Rogers and became her student. Her presence and teachings opened me up to a whole new way of seeing things. Over a 5-year period, she taught me a wide variety of tools and healing techniques.

Over the next decade or so, I traveled extensively, both in the UK and abroad, offering individual and group healing sessions, spiritual development classes and workshops. I also opened two healing centres.

Although successful in my work, I still had the gnawing sense of 'something missing'.

I returned once again to India and this time got a clear message to "stop focusing on others and turn my attention inwards."

I took a sabbatical from healing and teaching and got a job as a taxi driver. I began to meditate daily. As my inner experience deepened, my desire for 'more' reached fever pitch. The restlessness in my heart was bigger than ever and with it, the desire to 'come home'.

I signed up for a 6-month meditation retreat in the Rocky Mountains of Canada and it was there that I met Krishnananda, a significant teacher in my life.

Three months into the retreat I had a life-changing experience ...the restlessness I had experienced for years simply vanished, to be replaced with a wondrous feeling of peace, joy, expansion and connection - and the clear knowing it had been there all along, covered up ironically, by my incessant searching

It was the very same experience I used to have as a child!

The difference this time, however, was that I was conscious of what I was experiencing, and moreover, I understood how I had got there.

Seeing the way 'home' became the inspiration for creating this site on finding happiness. which is no different than our natural, authentic state. It is unhappiness which is unnatural.

I qualified as a meditation teacher and spent the next three years teaching meditation classes in Mexico.

I wrote the book, "KICK THE THINKING HABIT", available through this website as an e-book, providing step-by-step guidance on how to return to the state of presence and childlike innocence, the natural state of happiness we all long for.

I am now living with my partner Susanne in the countryside outside Edinburgh, where I write,  teach mindfulness meditation and offer spiritual life coaching sessions.

We spend several months each winter in Tiruvannamalai, South India, home of the great sage Ramana Maharshi (see the image above of the holy mountain Arunachala) meditating and studying non-duality teachings.

I feel extremely blessed and fortunate to have met the wonderful teachers and teachings I have encountered. My passion and desire now is to share what I have learned with others.

I hope you enjoy the website. Please feel free to contact me with any queries, comments or just to say hi!

Peace, Richard
